Who We Help

Abode has placed 10,243 people into permanent housing since 2020.

Last year, we assisted more than 15,000 people in our programs.

We serve a wide range of people, including children, adults, families, military veterans, single parents, seniors, chronically homeless individuals and households, and more.

Families

Abode has made my life a lot better.

VanessA

Vanessa once lived on the streets as a young adult, as she struggled with depression and anxiety after growing up in an abusive environment. Her bouts with mental health issues led to drug use, money woes, early pregnancy and homelessness.

Vanessa, who grew up in San Leandro, was spiraling downward until she and her three young children found a spot in our Sunrise Village Emergency Shelter. She then was placed in one of our permanent supportive housing sites.

After that, she found the strength to focus on improving her life and providing opportunities for her children.

Without their help, my life would still be quite miserable.

Melvin

The irony was not lost on Melvin when – after years of managing a homeless shelter – he and his family suddenly were on the verge of living on the streets.

Melvin, a Vietnam War veteran, stopped working at the shelter and lost his main source of income after the Stockton church that housed the facility closed its doors for good.

Melvin moved his life partner, Alicia, and their children with him into a studio to save money while he looked for a new job. But their landlord evicted them for having too many people in the unit.
